Set a domain bid ceiling from evidence

Verify the registration, screen the name, price the first year of ownership, and approve a fixed acquisition limit.

01

Verify the asset and its job

Use ICANN Lookup to confirm the registrar, registration status, and available registration data. Write the domain's job in one line: primary site, campaign redirect, product name, email protection, or traffic capture.

Estimate value for that job over twelve months. Use attributable revenue, avoided campaign setup, measured direct traffic, or an approved protection budget. A vague future project supplies no bid value.

  1. Save the ICANN lookup result and date
  2. Name the owner and intended use
  3. Write the twelve-month value calculation
02

Screen rights before money moves

Search the name and close variants in the USPTO trademark search system. Record relevant owners, goods and services, filing status, and serial or registration numbers. Send uncertain cases to trademark counsel before bidding.

The WIPO guide to the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy lists three elements in an abusive-registration claim: confusing similarity, absence of rights or legitimate interests, and bad-faith registration and use. A purchase aimed at another owner's mark requires legal review.

03

Calculate the ceiling and stop there

Add the purchase price, broker fee, escrow fee, first renewal, migration work, and first-year operation. Subtract those costs from the approved twelve-month value. The remainder is the maximum bid.

Check renewal and recovery charges before approval. ICANN requires registrars to publish renewal, post-expiration, and redemption fees. Save the registrar fee page with the bid record. Enter the fixed ceiling once and require a new approval for any increase.

Completion check

  • ICANN registration data is saved
  • The domain has one named job
  • Trademark results and counsel notes are attached
  • The ceiling includes acquisition and first-year costs

Put a sourced procedure beside every brand decision.
